Barndominium Builders in North Houston and Montgomery County
Custom barndominiums on your acreage, built to the same construction standards as a Wonderview custom home
What We Build
Living Space, Shop Space, and Land All in One Build
A barndominium is the build that lets you do something a traditional custom home can't. You get a finished, livable interior on one side of the structure and a working shop, garage, or storage space on the other, all under one metal-skin building on the acreage you already own.
The right reason to build one is flexibility. Some of the barndos we build are full primary residences with a high-end shop bay attached. Some are weekend or hunting properties that need to be lockable, low-maintenance, and ready to live in without the cost of a traditional custom home. Some are guest or in-law residences sitting on the back end of a property where the main house already exists. The structure adapts to what your land needs.
What separates a Wonderview barndominium from the cheap-shell version of this build is what gets done inside. The trades, the mechanical systems, and the finished interior follow the same standards we use on a custom home. The cost comes down because the exterior shell goes up faster and uses less material than a traditional framed home, not because the inside got value-engineered into a contractor flip.
How a Barndominium Build Runs
A Shorter Custom Process for a Different Kind of Home
The way a barndominium build runs with us is similar to a custom home build, with a few phases moving faster because the exterior shell is more standardized. We start with a conversation about your land, what you want under one roof (living, shop, garage, storage, all of the above), and what you're working with budget-wise. From there, we put together a rough proposal and ask for a deposit that funds the design and pricing work.
Design moves quicker on a barndominium than on a custom home. The shell geometry is more constrained, the structural decisions are simpler, and most of the design conversation is about the interior layout and where the working space ends and the living space begins. We pull cost numbers as the design develops the same way we do on a custom build, and we get hard bids from every trade against your actual interior selections before the construction contract is signed.
Once we break ground, our project manager and builder stays involved at the job site through the entire build. Every barndominium is backed by the same ten-year structural warranty and one-year labor warranty as our custom homes. After you move in, we want you to call us when something comes up, even if it's small and even if it's not technically our problem.
Common Questions About Building a Barndominium
- How much does a barndominium cost to build?expand_more
- A basic shell-and-pad barndominium runs significantly less per square foot than an equivalent traditional custom home. The finished-out interior square footage tends to land closer to the starter custom tier range of $150 to $200 per square foot, depending on how much of the structure is finished living space versus shop or storage. Our Houston Custom Home Cost Guide has the full per-square-foot tier breakdown.
- Can I live in a barndominium full-time?expand_more
- Yes. A properly built barndominium is a permanent residence with the same mechanical systems, insulation, and finishes as a traditional custom home. The difference is the structural shell, not the livability.
- Can I have a shop or garage attached to the living space?expand_more
- That's one of the main reasons people build barndominiums. We design the interior layout around how you actually want the structure to work, whether that's a 1,500-square-foot living section with a 2,500-square-foot shop bay, a primary residence with an attached three-car garage, or any other split that fits your acreage and how you use it.
- How long does a barndominium build take?expand_more
- The shell phase tends to move faster than a traditional custom home because the metal-building components are more standardized. Most of our barndominium builds run nine to fifteen months from the initial sit-down to move-in, depending on the size of the interior finish-out and the permitting timeline in your county.
- Will a barndominium hold its value the way a custom home does?expand_more
- The construction quality is what determines that, not the shell type. A barndominium built to our construction standards on Texas acreage holds value the same way a custom home on the same land does. A cheap-shell barndo finished out with contractor-grade trades does not.
- Where can I build a barndominium in our service area?expand_more
- Most of our barndo builds are on acreage in Montgomery County and the rural parts of North Houston (Magnolia, Conroe, Huffman, Navasota, Willis). Some municipalities and HOAs have restrictions on metal-skin structures or on combined live-work residences, so the answer depends on your specific lot. We'll know within the first conversation whether the build is workable on your land.
